Thriving in the New Normal

Thriving in the New Normal

Nov 01, 2020 by Melvyn Tan

How do you speak to someone who does not speak the same language as you? You’d probably use hand signs or diagrams.

What if we have a language that can be used in a multinational, multicultural environment?

And what if this language also enables us to use it as a problem-solving tool?

And what if this language is accessible to everyone who chooses to learn it?

Wouldn’t that be cool?

Michael Goodman, Principal at Innovation Associates Organizational Learning, states that when you can speak the language skillfully it’s when you find yourself thinking in it.

All of this sounds fantastic, so what is this language?

It’s called Systems ThinkingGoodman puts it this way:

The discipline of systems thinking is more than just a collection of tools and methods – it’s also an underlying philosophy.

The key reason you want to learn this language is this:

Although systems is seen by many as a powerful problem-solving tool, we believe it is more powerful as a language, augmenting and changing the ordinary ways we think and talk about complex issues.

You do want to thrive in the new normal, don’t you? Starting today, go beyond observing events or data. Seek to identify recurring patterns of behavior related to these events. In doing so, you are taking the first step in changing the way you learn in the new normal.

Strategies to Get Unstuck

Getting stuck sucks. You also lose precious time feeling lost. And no matter what you try, you just can’t seem to get unstuck. It is like trying not to think of the pink elephant. If you’ve been feeling stuck of late, here’s a three-pronged approach to help you get out of the funk.

Give it a shot and let me know how it went.

Keeping Things in Things

As we enter into the final quarter of 2020, there’s much to look forward to despite all the happenings. As Abraham Lincoln said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it,” you’d want to start creating what 2021 will look like for you. After my experiences with Todoist, Toodledo, TickTick, I’ve finally (I think) settled on an iOS and macOS only tool called, Things. If you’d like me to share how I use Things to help me get ahead, let me know.

Can’t Get It Out of Your Head

We know how it’s like. You’ve got that song or tune stuck in your head. And you don’t know the title of the song!

Well, fret not, ‘cos Google has come to your rescue.
