When I started my own training and consulting firm, I wanted a hand in everything. I conducted every single workshop. I vetted every piece of work. I even sent out every single invoice.

10 years later, I was wildly successful but I was miserable.

The mistake

The mistake I made was I failed to delegate. Worse than that, I never documented my processes for getting things done.

Because I’ve never documented my processes, it was literally impossible for me to delegate.

Any attempts made to delegate will have me feeling this way: it is faster for me to do it myself than to explain to someone else how to get it done. As a result, I never did delegate.

Burnt out

As time passes, I would feel more and more exhausted. Until I began to feel resentful towards my work. Work that I used to love, now I hate.

I was exhausted. I burnt my candles at both ends. I was suffering from burnt out.

Documenting my processes

Now, here’s what I do instead. When I have figured the workflow for my new projects, I would then document the process using Workflowy.
