Today is the eve of Chinese New Year. Tomorrow, we will be celebrating the annual spring festival (春节).

This is the time where we:

  • Gather together for dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve, which we called the reunion dinner
  • Decorate our house with the color Red and wear Red clothings, as it is believed to be the auspicious color, as well as according to this Chinese folktale
  • Give Red Envelopes (紅包), which contains money, to our children, and generally anyone who is not married, as it symbolizes giving them luck to the receivers
  • Give tangerines when we go visiting relatives and friends, as it symbolizes gifting (and exchanging) of happiness and wealth

Starting February 08, 2016 is also when we welcome the Fire Monkey. The Monkey is ninth of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle.

It is believed that people born in the year of the Monkey have certain unique characteristics.

In the Year of the Monkey

There are five types of Monkey, each corresponding to the five elements of Gold, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. 2016 is the Year of the Fire Monkey, which is characterized by being ambitious and adventurous, but irritable.
